The eight-team Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament- 2016, organised by Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), begins tomorrow (Friday) at the Shams-Ul-Huda Stadium in Jessore amid huge enthusiasm among the local fans, reports UNB.
Bangladesh national football team will play Sri Lankan national team in the inaugural match tomorrow at 2:45 pm.
Channel 9 and Bangladesh Television will telecast the match live while Bangladesh Beter will broadcast the running commentary of the match.
Six foreign teams and two local teams will compete in the 4th edition of the country’s major international soccer tournament scheduled for January 8-20 at the Shams-Ul-Huda Stadium in Jessore and Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
Eight participating teams — Malaysia, Sri Lanka National team,
Bangladesh National team and Nepal National team (Group A), Bahrain, Maldives National team, Cambodian National team and Bangladesh Olympic (Under-23) team (Group B) -- split into two groups will compete in the first phase.
BFF Senior Vice President and member-secretary of the Organising Committee Abdus Salam Murshedy disclosed the details of the tournament at a press conference at the BFF conference room Wednesday.
BFF member and chairman of the security and traffic management committee Sheikh Maruf Hasan, BFF member and chairman of the ticketing, gate management and seating arrangement committee Sheikh Mohammad Aslam, and BFF general secretary Abu Nayem Shohag spoke on the occasion.
Sri Lankan national football team already reached the capital Wednesday morning and left the city for Jessore in the afternoon.
Defending champions Malaysia will arrive in the capital today (Thursday) at 11:30 am while Nepal National team will reach the city at 4:00 pm.
Both the teams will leave the capital for Jessore on the same day at 5:30 pm.
Bahrain will arrive here tomorrow (Friday) night, followed by Cambodia Saturday and the Maldives Sunday (Jan 10). Bangladesh National team already reached Jessore Monday while Bangladesh Olympic Team will fly for Jessore Saturday.
Replying to a query, Abdus Salam Murshedy said, “All six foreign
teams confirmed their participation in the meet, there is no scope of withdrawal of team after making entry in the AFC approved tournament.”
“Tight security measures were taken for the players and officials of the tournament at airport, team hotels, practices and games venues with effective traffic and security management,” said Sheikh Maruf Hasan.
Some 12,000 tickets, costing Tk 50 to Tk 300, will go on sale in Jessore from today.
But 21,805 tickets of different categories, costing Tk 2000 to Tk 100, will be released for Dhaka venue matches, scheduled to start Tuesday (Jan 12).
Jessore is ready to host four Bangabandhu Gold Cup Football matches at the Shams-ul-Huda Stadium and the necessary renovation works at the stadium were almost completed.
Match tickets will be available at 20 points of Jessore sadar and seven upazilas of the district.
Bangladesh national football team, under the guidance of team head coach Maruful Haque made practices for the 2nd successive day in Jessore Police Lines ground ahead of their opening match against Sri Lanka.
